Hasan Gözlügöl

Product Designer in Lisbon

Over the last 8 years, I've designed software and web applications in diverse fields: healthcare, translation, collaboration platforms, and civil society organisations.

For as long as I can remember, I've been drawn to human-computer interaction. I enjoy identifying and tackling complex problems. I'm comfortable prototyping my ideas in code.

Beyond work, I enjoy spending time by the sea, cooking Anatolian food, reading about psychology or history (or whatever rabbit hole I’m pulled into).

Projects

2023

SurgAccord is an early-stage healthcare startup based in Amsterdam. Over the span of a year, I designed products and experiences that streamline typically burdensome processes for doctors, nurses, patients and medical researchers.

My work has included designing a comprehensive research tool, where researchers can survey patients and conduct randomised control trials inter alia. The tool also facilitates collaboration between medical institutions, healthcare facilities, and researchers. In addition, I worked on a mobile application which helps patients to prepare for surgeries and enables doctors to monitor their progress.

2020

Unbabel's video service offered subtitles using Machine Translation and Automatic Speech Recognition, which was then refined by human editors. Clients included: TED, CNN España, Great Big Story, and Journeyman Pictures.

Between 2018 and 2020, I led design for the service, designing a range of products and user journeys for every step in the pipeline, from transcription to translation, subtitling, and quality assessment. These tools had a substantial impact: doubling editor efficiency and engagement, increasing quality by a third and halving costs.

2017

Plek is a collaboration platform used by hundreds of organisations including the Dutch Government, International Water Association, the Dutch Institute for Human Rights and Amsterdam Fire Brigade.

During the platform's early years between 2016-2017, I was in charge of product design. Working closely with the founders and engineering, I outlined product specs and designed many of the foundational modules including chat, newsfeed, forms, events, groups, documents, search, and taxonomy.

I also led the design of Plek's first native mobile application from scratch, a challenging task that involved distilling the platform's complex functionalities into a simple and intuitive user experience.

Work Experience

Product Designer at Freelance

As an independent designer, I work with agencies, non-profits, and start-ups. My work ranges from designing tools for medical researchers to conduct randomised controlled trials to helping environmental organisations run more engaging campaigns.

I've recently collaborated with Mighty Earth, Forward Action, Ekō, Plek and SurgAccord.

Volunteering

2023 — 2023
Maraş, Turkey

Following the earthquakes, I went to Turkey to help with the recovery efforts. I joined KAF, a volunteer-run collective who came together after the disaster. The project initially began as a field kitchen to serve warm food to people impacted but it quickly grew into a hands-on, community, disaster relief network.

By teaming up organisations such as Water Mission, World Central Kitchen, Architecture for All Association, All Hands and Hearts as well as using our own contacts, we were able to help thousands of displaced people receive food, clean water, shelter, healthcare, education and even employment. My role varied on a day to day basis between preparing food and coordinating operations. As part of the coordination team, I attended a course provided by Medair on disaster zone camp management, which helped us better structure our work.

After receiving media coverage, we raised tens of thousands of euros which allowed us to employ more people impacted by the disaster and expand our infrastructure.

Side Projects

2014
Seeing Science

I created a series of visual interpretations of scientific concepts in this handmade book. This was one of my graduation products. It was featured in Creative Review.

2014
Conveying Experience

My final year degree report explores how interactions within a physical space influence human behaviour and experience.

The report was selected to be in the permanent collection of the London College of Communication.

2013
H₂O

An installation group project to raise awareness about water contamination from pesticides used in mass-produced vegetables. The installation was styled to resemble a typical supermarket, and then subvert expectations by providing information on the environmental and health impacts of mass-produced vegetables.

Collaboration with Alex Lloyd, Daniel Apt, Joana Fernandes and Theo Mayers.

2013
Oblique Jenga

An experimental fusion of Oblique Strategies, developed by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt, with the tactile nature of Jenga blocks. Oblique Strategies is a series of statements designed to provoke lateral thinking in creative processes, traditionally printed on cards for random selection. My aim was to add a tactile dimension by turning it into a physically interactive game.
